I'm reading a collection of short stories called "Fifteen by Maupassant".

I'm on 'At the Mountain Inn'. Glad I stumbled across this at my parent's house.
He's able to give beautiful descriptions of things while not having to use too many words.

I've never understood why it is that some people are so insistent on 'authentic' pronunciation of foreign words.

Once a word, and yes, that includes proper names, is imported into English, it becomes an English word and subject to English grammar and pronunciation.

Do you think the French or the Spanish are as stubbornly insisting on 'authentic' pronunciation of English words? Do you imagine there are snooty Frenchman who like to correct other Frenchmen 'it is pronounced ham-bur-ger?'

Of course not, they just turn those borrowed words into French words and pronounced them however they feel like it. And yes, that includes proper names, I can tell you from first-hand talking to Frenchmen that they have a funny way of pronouncing English names. When I was in college, there was an international student from France I used to hang around with, this was around 1998-2001.

You should have heard the way he pronounced names like 'Bill Clinton', 'Monica Lewinsky' or 'George Bush', I can assure you, even though he was living in the United States he still pronounced them according to the rules of French pronunciation, not English. Authenticity was not even remotely his concern.

The correct way to pronounce a name is the way the person who has that name pronounces it. :fyi:

Ditto for town names. It is the height of arrogance to insist on pronouncing a name incorrectly just because one is too proud or lazy to care how the locals say it. How do you think people of the United States got the well-earned reputation abroad as ignoramuses?

It's not only Americans who do that though.
I worked with many people of Latin American descent who would pronounce my name 'Tim' as 'Teem'...but would insist that I pronounced their name as they say it. One lady name Miriam pronounced her name like 'Midiam'... when I pronounced it like 'Miriam' she said 'no, Teem, its pronounced Midiam'

When he tried to teach me Spanish, my ex used to say "Hablas español como una vaca inglesa." Admittedly, it's just one of the many reasons he's an ex.

But it did push me to work on pronunciation. Nowadays, I get asked "How did you learn to speak Spanish so well?" Even better, I can listen and pick up on dialects: where a speaker is from, how well- (or poorly-) educated s/he is, etc.

Read a few of his short stories. I think "The Homecoming" is one of the best... "The Adoption" left me with a weird feeling.

Some of the little twists at the very end of each story has almost like a Twilight Zone comeuppance feel to it.... the only thing is that most of the time the person doesn't deserve the fate.
