This novel has come up in my "recommended books" for a long time. I've never read anything by the author....

Lately I simply cannot find a GOOD novel. My library limits me to 10 Hoopla checkouts per month, so, I am very selective. I usually just get non-fiction, far fewer "wasted" selections.

With the spinning of my life this past week, I wanted to lose myself in a novel, so, I clicked it. Now, granted, there are sex scenes in it - but, they are few and they are not long, drawn out things. They do seem to be integral to the story.

I LOVE his writing style. He writes a story I can just fall into and really forget my troubles. Half way through (limiting myself to 2 hours per day)....

Anyone else read this novel or other of his work?

I love Neil Gaiman's work, too, but I gotta admit, after reading American Gods, I haven't touched a word he's written since.

I'm still disturbed by that opening scene in the book. It haunts me, and I read the book at least 5 years ago. Thank God the rest of the book isn't like that (I had to finish it), and if that passage had been left out, it still would have been an excellent story. But to this day, I wish to God I hadn't read it.

Yeah...opening scene was not needed in that manner. Disgusting

Funny, I'd already forgotten that scene! Had to peek back to remember it - I sort of roll past those.

Gaiman likes Chesterton.

have no idea about the book... but if the tv adaption is true to the book.... well, good golly miss molly .. i thought legion was weird... after two episodes of AG, i'm thinking we may have a winner for bizarre

Gaiman is also a Gene Wolfe fan.
And if anyone wants a really wicked and fun read pick up Wolfe's "Peace".

have a feeling i know what you are talking about... was not the opeining to the series... but it didn't take long to get to it... no big surprise there.... and since it airs on starz... well you can imagine

And then read it again, just to be sure. After you recover, go on to other Wolfe.

And Gene is also a Gaiman fan - and friend. They did a little, short, oddity, A WALKING TOUR OF THE SHAMBLES, together.

I almost met Gaiman once. Had to settle for my daughter reporting what he had said to her. I did get his mailing address from a friend of his, but lost it.

I pretty much hate Gaiman's stuff and largely blame him for the emo shadows cast over the comic book medium these days.

I like Fiddler's Green, in SANDMAN.

And my daughter said he was very friendly.

And yet, the first episode of Doctor Who that he wrote, "The Doctor's Wife," isn't only "not emo," but it's a fan favorite that's consistently listed among the top 10 NewWho episodes.


The second one he wrote, "Nightmare in Silver," was cringeworthy, however.

What books of his would you suggest?
I read American Gods and while there was much I liked about it.... there was much I didn't.

My introduction to Neil Gaiman was his juvenile fiction while I was teaching school - I especially loved Coraline, which was also very popular with my students.

I will also say that, while I am not a fan of Tim Burton movies, I had to admit that he was without a doubt the only choice to direct the film version of Coraline, which was also excellent (which is saying a lot because I almost never like movies made from books that I've already read). My daughter, however, who watches modern horror films without batting an eye, couldn't watch Coraline. I'd say what she couldn't watch, but it's kind of a spoiler.

And I found my copy of AMERICAN GODS.
