This has to be one of Cronin's most enjoyable books. "Keys of the Kingdom", "The Citadel", and "The Judas Tree" were all very good. Then I read "The Green Years", "Hatter's Castle", and "A Song of Sixpence".... these three weren't that great. "Hatter's Castle" was just too long and the story plodded too many times. Could have been much better if it were shortened up.

"The Stars Look Down" is over 100 pages longer than "Hatter's Castle" but it's still a much more delightful read.

It deals with a very bad accident that occurs in a mining town. The way Cronin describes the disaster and the miners last moments is just haunting.

If you haven't read anything by Cronin yet I would really recommend this one. It's 700 pages but you'll just breeze through them.... there are many times when you just can't put the book down.

For who we are and what we'll be/ I'll sing your praise eternally/ the miles we've shared I'd trade but few/ they're the ones that kept me away from you.
