I'm betting you got the idea that the sword Merry carried was a gift of Galadriel, from the movie. Much as I liked the films, they are not, of course, canonical.

I think in the movies the hobbits get their swords from Aragorn, who has a supply of them. Why he's carrying around a bunch of swords fit for hobbits is never answered. Been a while since I've seen it though.

That is so. Since the Bombadil/Barrow bit was not in the movie, they had to get arms from somewhere.

I forget a lot of the movie. I bet you wish you could.

 What? Like, you don't carry a bunch of hobbit-sized swords around?

They're handy when you need to slice cucumbers and stuff. :fyi:

Agreed! Yet somehow I think there was probably a better way of doing this. Say, getting armed at Rivendell or something like that. I know PJ is capable of this -- the business with the moth at Orthanc was masterful.

But they needed weapons to face the Nazgûl at Weathertop.

Did they? Fire was far more effective. In fact Aragorn notes in the book that had Frodo's Barrow-blade actually hit its mark, it would have been destroyed ("all blades perish that pierce that dreadful king ... more deadly to him was the name of Elbereth").

Merry's Barrow-blade worked.

Perished, as noted above, but did the job.

Eventually - but not then and there. And in the battle at the Ford of Bruinen only Frodo drew his sword - which the Witch-king was able to break from afar. Merry was able to creep up behind the Witch-king and stab him only because the latter paid him no mind.
