Post subject:  History of the Catholic Church

Best book for a non-catholic, secular person (who has Muslim leanings), is engaged to a Catholic man. She asked me for a good history of the Church.

Within a couple of weeks we will have Symbolon and Barron's "Catholicism" video series available, might it be better to just have her watch those to begin?

If you feel strongly about Church history, probably the videos of Epic, now circulating in the Church are best, and I think they are in the process of being printed in book form. But the world-wide history of the Church is so complex that most historians get stuck in political issues and leave out most of the Catholic charity, education, hospitals, and other welfare.
I urge you to consider Eusebius' early history, or a summary of Lives of the Saints, even OBrien's Lives of the Popes (but very harsh and arrogant). Or consider the history of a monastery (perhaps Laura Mar Sabas or Monte Cassino). I pray others will suggest histories that effectively celebrate Catholic charity.
Of single volume histories, I think McSorley's is quite good, Bokenkotter's is absurdly anti-rational and euphorically idealistic.
