Dr. Gideon Fell.

His secondary detective is Sir Henry Merrivale, who has a touch of Winston Churchill.

He has a couple of subsidiary detectives including Henri Bencolin, Patrick Butler, and Col. March and did some historical mysteries, in addition.

His best work was done in the 30s-60s. When I was in college he lived about 100 miles from me and I thought seriously of trying to meet him, get some books signed and ask him about Chesterton. I never did.

Carr is one of the dozen or so Golden Age mystery writers that I collect.
