Now, what books do you read?

Friend has an 11 going on 12 year old who is "running out of things to read". Mom does not have time to pre-read everything.

My 11-year-old niece loves books about animals.

I presume the young lady has already read the Chronicles of Narnia, if she's an avid reader.

An easy answer would be to find a safe author or series....

Gene Stratton-Porter books
Louisa May Alcott books
L.M.Montgomery books
Arthur Ransome books
Joan Hiatt Harlow books (historical fiction)
Kate Seredy books
Little Britches series (like "Little House on the Prairie" but aimed more toward boys and very slightly older readers. Our whole family enjoys these immensely.)


The Great Brain series (mischief)
Happy Hollisters series (mystery)

I'll admit Austen and the Bronte sisters were a stretch ... not a fan personally but I know folks who like them.

Used to run into Strickland at SF cons. He once asked my Latin teacher daughter to translate a phrase into Latin for a Johnny Dixon story. Didn't make it into the book.
