I love picking up paperbacks for .50 or $1, but, sadly, my eyesight is worse now and paperback print is toooo small. Cannot spring for tri-focals, so, I am stuck with just staring longingly at my paperbacks.

You could always take one pair of glasses off and put on a pair of reading glasses (which I think can be found at a pharmacy for not too much money).

Or use a magnifying glass. I know someone with a degenerative eye condition (macular degeneration, maybe?) who does just that.

Even reading glasses require a prescription

not in any drug store down here ... they are just hanging on a rack for you to pick the style you wish to have ... or the one that fits the best on your head

Wearing glasses that are not designed for your eyes is going to create greater damage.

It used to be that when you went on an airplane or visited a beach, you would see people reading books. Now you see them starting at e-readers and tablets. Actual physical books are becoming as rare as a CD player.

Not around here, no.

Got 3 CD players, too.

the only cd player i have is in my car... but that is where i listen to 95% of my music... the other 5% is on youtube or on the amazon music player which has the auto rip music of some of the CDs i have ordered in the last 12 months

No, brace yourself. I have 14 Ian Douglas books. Have read three and begun a fourth.

Sounds promising.

You are not in danger from Ian Douglas books.

I would never buy glasses that weren't designed specifically for my eyes unless I wanted to go blind, anything sold off the rack to everyone is just a placebo.

straying once again from the fallacious statement you made doom ... and while you may never do so, i would hazard a guess that many people do... if they didn't , then the stores would not stock them ... why have merchandise if no one will avail themselves of it... it is no placebo if people are actually able to , you know, read with them on...when they couldn't before ... hence the name ... reading glasses :wave

No, reading glasses don't require a prescription. And they won't make you go blind. On the contrary, they will assist your eyes, relieving strain, and mitigating the antecedents of blindness.

I also use them for fine, detailed work. Rather than my normal glasses, which don't do the trick.

And, now, a fifth. I have to keep up my count of books being currently read. Currently, about 20.

A good beginning. Finished 2nd book of Turtledove's War That Came Early series yesterday. Am 140 pages into the 3rd book in the series.

They are, I believe, merely magnifying lenses in an eyeglass frame.

I have that very bookbook in my home. It wasn't actually free, as it required a trip to Salt Lake City.

What's your definition of a real book? Hardback or paperback, it's still a book in my book! ::):

I'm just asking for trouble....

Ebooks are great. Besides the convience of not carrying bulk during my hour commute I love the ability to buy online and get it in a few seconds. I bought the cheapest tablet I could find. In addition, books that are not copyrighted are often available free.
What's not to like?

That it's not a book.
