My wife bought me the book and it's not great.
No illustrations, no footnotes/text explaining sections of it.

I can see on amazon that there are quite a few different editions.... but amazon seems to lump everything together. So you can't tell if you're looking at one that actually has those illustrations and footnotes.

As a matter of fact, they have the edition that my wife bought me and in those comments for that book they're talking about how nice the illustrations are and that the footnotes could be better; which is impossible since I have that edition and none of those are in there.

So, if someone could recommend an edition that has good illustrations as well as footnotes I'd appreciate it.

There are several annotated editions:

Yeah, an annotated version.

The very first one on that link is the one I have that does not have any annotations.
As I said: amazon does a bad job of just lumping a bunch together.

I was hoping to see if anyone here had one that they particularly liked.
Heck, I know how to search Amazon, Doom.... I'm looking for some suggestions.

Did you look at it beyond the first one? There are 3 different ones just on the first page that are called 'Annotated Edition', right there in the title

Doom, you ol battle axe, I know.... I still am curious if anyone has one they're fond of. Not all editions are equal. I learned this quickly with the different illustrated books on Wind in the Willows.

You said that you couldn't tell the difference between the ones that just had to text with no notes and the ones that had extensive notes.

That is why I thought it would be helpful to point out that some of them are explicitly called "Annotated Editions", these are the ones with the extensive explanatory notes.

I thought that would help you figure out which ones have notes and which ones don't, which is what you said was your problem.

Yeah... part of the problem. I rounded off that beaut of a post asking if anyone would recommend one they liked. Since again: not all editions are equal.

You might see if any of them have cover blurbs from people you trust. Otherwise, just close your eyes and pick one, I guess.

On the road to Mandalay...

Or, absent a plethora of advice on a specific volume, you could read the Amazon reviews.

I've been using Milton's Complete English Poems from Everyman's Library and, for illustrations, Paradise Lost from Arcturus Publishing (2005).

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have one coming, but if it's not that great I'll look into the one you suggested.
