Post subject: Convert / Priest / Married with children
PostPosted: Mon Mar 27, 2006 6:24 am
Hi,

My name is Vaughn Treco and I am a married convert to Catholicism. My wife, Norma, and I have three children and we will be celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary in a couple months. We made our journey to the Catholic Church together - even if we engaged our conversions in very distinct ways.

I was raised within a wonderfully devout Plymouth Brethren family in the Bahamas. My dad was the lead elder in our congregation for almost forty years. The various name changes that our congregation underwent reveals something of its character:

+ Founded as East Shirley Street Gospel Hall (ca. 1950's)
+ Renamed Grace Gospel Chapel (ca. 1969)
+ Renamed Grace Community Church (ca. late 1990's)

Although dad was never one for public speaking, he was responsible for the instruction of most of the men and women who joined our assembly during his time as an elder. Today, he and my mom continue to be passionate in their love for Christ and active participants in the life of Grace.

My journey to Catholicism is intregally connected to the biblical foundation that I received at Grace, and with the Plymouth Brethren Movement's (PBM) passionate commitment to following the New Testament pattern. Even though I have come to reject the PB's conclusions regarding where the NT church might be found, I have not lost its resolve to settle for nothing less than the Church founded by Christ and the faith once delivered to the saints.

I was a sophmore in college when I was initially dislodged from the PBM through a reading of the Apostolic Fathers (and numerous Protestant books on church history). Even so, it would be almost two decades before I would be embraced by the Church. Here are a few things that I did in the intervening years:

+ Confirmed, EPISCOPAL CHURCH USA
+ Short-term mission, KENTON BAPTIST CHURCH, London, England
+ Pastoral internship, CHURCH OF THE SAVIOR (PBM), Mpls, MN
+ Pastor-in-Training, GRACE GOSPEL CHAPEL, Nassau, Bahamas
+ Founding Co-Pastor, NEW PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY CHURCH, Nassau, Bahamas (a Willow Creek styled congregation)
+ Deacon / Priest / Seminary Instructor / Canon Theologian, INTERNATIONAL COMMUNION OF THE CHARISMATIC EPISCOPAL CHURCH (CEC)

In very specific ways our Lord used each of the communities listed above to draw me ever more closely to himself and his Church. However, it was within the context of a Father-Confessor relationship - while serving as a priest in the CEC - that I came to recognize that the Roman Catholic Church is the church whose founding by Chrst is recounted in the Gospels and whose early history is told through the Acts of the Apostles and the apostolic letters collected as the New Testament some time later. It was a long time coming, but I finally was given "ears to hear."

At the Easter Vigil of the Great Jubilee Year 2000, my wife and I were received into the Church by Fr. Franklyn M. McAfee in Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Great Falls, Virginia. A lot has happened since then. Here are a few highlights:

+ Two years of service to the Catholic Diocese of Arlington (Virginia) as the Program Director for Marriage Preparation
+ Almost three years of service as the Youth Minister for Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, Woodbridge, Virginia
+ Received Vatican approval of a petition to be ordained to the Catholic priesthood
+ Began theological and pastoral formation in preparation for ordination

Well, that's the jist of my story: I'll be happy to share more details as questions arise.

Thanks for the invitation to join this forum Evanescence - whoever you are!

Many blessings,
Vaughn

Hello and Welcome to the board Vaughn,

What a small world, I had a great aunt that lived in Alexandria and I have cousins in Great Falls. You wouldn't happen to know if the "Old Fishmarket" (I believe that was the name of the restaurant) is still going strong in Old Town (Alexandria)?
