Religion: Returning Catholic
Hello im a returning Catholic. I left the church years ago and have tried coming back a few times. I made the mistake of studying a few years with the churches of Christ. They claim to be the one true church. The first church mentioned in Acts. I just haven't been able to believe that. I keep feeling the call back to Catholicism. I am meeting with a priest Tuesday. Id like to study the Catholic faith so I can defend it when I need to. But I also want someday to become a deacon. Should I start studying the catechism or can you all recommend some good books. Possibly on apologetics. Thanks Rob

Greetings to DCF. I would recommend attending a Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) class (actually a series of classes) at a Parish. It is for those primarily new to the Church but often includes those returning or wanting to better understand Church doctrine. Also, ask questions in the 101 forum.

Welcome to DCF.

The last phrase in your above sentence is key. Remember,

1) You don't have to attend every argument you're invited to; and
2) If you feel that you absolutely must enter the discussion always be willing to say, "I don't know, but I'll look into it and get back to you." if needed.

Church of Christ as in Restoration movement? Non-instrumental?

I'm a covert who grew up in the Restoration movement CoC/Christian Churches (the brotherhood who uses instruments). Both my grandaddy and my daddy are ministers in that brotherhood (they don't use the term "denomination")

Welcome!!!!

I like Treebeard's pointers. You could try some of Steve Ray's books. He was our board founder. A lot of people here like his stuff.

It's really just amusing nowadays when these groups all claim to be the original Church. I guess they never heard of this thing call Wikipedia. The Church of Christ was founded by Mr. Cambell in the year 1800 and something. That's why many just call 'em Cambellites.

Yes it was the non instrumental coc
Thanks everyone for the welcome. I met with a priest who gave me the compendium for the catechism, Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly and scripture source book for Catholics. Reading all three at once I can't get enough. Went to a Catholic mens night at church. Adoration and I went to confession. I feel so much better. Also gave me Catholicism dvd set to watch. Im going to watch them this weekend. I feel like im finally where God wants me. After confession during adoration I could feel him. Never had that at coc.

A lot of bishop Sheen's talks are available online for free. I love listening to him. Great stuff.

You don't actually have to -- or need to -- defend the Faith. Were I you, I would focus on myself as I reentered the Church ... doing the reading and educating yourself.

My response to those who demand I justify my faith has become, "I believe because I choose to. I don't have to defend that choice."

:fyi: The "Churches of Christ" claiming they are the "true church" because the term "church of Christ" can be found in the Bible, is analogous to slapping a BMW sticker on an old beat-up Ford Pinto and claiming it's a genuine Beemer .....

The real test is, can they trace their doctrines back to the earliest centuries of Christianity?
