Post subject:  SB Converting to Catholic & getting confirmed on Pentecost

Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to introduce myself. I am converting to Catholicism after being raised a Southern Baptist.

It is a joyous time and I have been studying quite a bit to prepare for my confirmation.

My only hang-up is convincing my Mother and Grandmother that I am doing the right thing, or at least something that isn't completely out of bounds.

I am here to learn from others how I might be able to explain things to them that I don't fully understand yet myself to get on some level of positive understanding with them. At this point, it doesn't look like they will be attending my confirmation on Pentecost.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated..... Thanks!

welcome to our slice of cyberspace r/m/hp... from another ex-sb, tiber swim team alum '98

just tell them that you wish to be part of the Church that has Jesus as its founder and it is important that you are obedient to His commands... you didn't say how old you are, but when i discussed this with my dad (i was a late life convert at 45) his only concern was that i go to a church somewhere since, except for a short period of time in my life, i was a seriously lukewarm back sliding baptist

Welcome! And Welcome Home!

I'm sure you are very excited right about now. I remember my conversion, and it was very exciting for me.

You are in a good place to learn. Lots of converts here. Ask those questions. We are ready to help!

I found the picture on google images with the search term "funny Sheep". It really struck me as a depiction of how I feel right now in the process of converting.

I was looking for a heard of sheep and was going to use the name "1 flock / 1 Shepherd" because it seems to me that this is an important point from scripture in terms of all of us believers being included in the covenant and in the Body of Christ.

It seems to me that the lines that separate us are more of our imaginations and narrow-mindedness. I imagine that our Lord sees us as his flock comprised of a bunch of sheep that are each confused in their own special way and He loves us and whistles to us and calls us by our names. If any one of us really "has it right" for a moment, it is probably because He is with us in that moment.

Anyway, thank you all for the warm welcome! I sincerely mean that and look forward to learning and sharing with this group!

Nope, not true.

There are those who are in the flock and those who are lost.

True, but hopefully he's with us all the time, and we'd have it right because we are doing what we he has told us to do.

Yes, howdy! Sorry I took you to task already, this post just sounded too universalist, but you'll get the hang of it.

Hi and welcome!

My husband was just received into the Church on Easter. He was raised a Southern Baptist also though he never attended Church long enough to actually become Baptized. For him, he didn't really have to convince his mother of anything since she knew he didn't go to Church anyway. I think she was happy that he was going and that he finally has been baptized. She wasn't happy enough to attend though.

As for convincing them, honestly, I wouldn't even try. If they should question you, just say that you strongly believe God is calling you to join the Catholic Church. Pray before every conversation with them that the Holy Spirit will guide your words so that you may speak with love and that they are open to receive your words.

One piece of advice I will give you is to get involved. Participate in Church functions. Seek out groups that interest you. I say this because it is especially easy to become a fallen away Catholic when you are surrounded by people who either aren't Catholic or don't practice. So, get involved in the various ministries at your Catholic Church that you are interested in.

Lisa

Welcome rock!

I second Lisa's advice about getting in with a group at your parish that you would like to be in. It is good to be surrounded with fellow Catholics for support.

Sometimes, if it is possible for you, there will be groups available at other parishes nearby that might interest you. My particular parish is not strong in giving Catholic Bible studies, but two neighboring parishes are, and I have gone to them for the studies.

Don't tell me you're a feminist, either. :rant

However, I'll save that for later and will give you a warm welcome as a former Methodist/Baptist/Fundamentalist/Non-denominational and member of the Tiber Swim Team class of 2012. Come on in, the water's fine! :shower
