I joined the week before Easter, 2000. So that would have been around the middle of April.

My first post was a response to a conundrum by Bernard Tiffany. walt immediately attacked my post, and I almost left the same day I started.

Speaking of 'In the beginning'....In addition to Bernard, there are a couple who have dropped off over the years, that I still sometimes wonder about:

True Heart
Melanie

Melanie was a mother of 3 who lived in the southwest, and could always be counted on to respond with a short, but very funny answer. True Heart always had devastatingly, logical answers, but would never suffer fools gladly. Never revealed much. Left because apologetics became too aggravating.

True Heart registered on the new board, posted once or twice, then disappeared.

I was here waaay back then. I think I first signed on in late 1998 or early 1999. I was here, I left (when Catholicism got too scary), I came back. I was either CK or CLK back then. I don't remember which ...or maybe it was both.

It was that phase during my conversion when I realized that if I beleived everything that I believed I was going to have to make sweeping life changes. Including, but not limited to, convincing my husband (who at that time had no interest in the Church at all) to petition for a Declaration of Nullity ... It was overwhelming. I needed time to adjust.

Oh really?! I totally forgot.

I think the very first quest ion I asked had to do with my son participating in a somewhat evangelical youth group. I believe it was first answered, (very nicely I might add) by Gary Hoge. Had to be right around 1999 or so.

Dan aka bagodan (soon Siggy soon :) )

I think one of the most memorable of the old poster was SAM (SecretAgentMan)... who's still out there in cyberland...

I started reading when the board was still in the old format. I lurked for a long time before I joined, after the new format was set up. I remember a lot of the names mentioned too, and didn't realize that some of the names here are the same people--that schokel was bagodan or the carole was CLK, for instance. :)

*edit to add: Yes, Tango. SAM was one of my favorites, and I was so sorry that he didn't want to continue on the board when the format changed.

I remember one year he took off for lent, and came back as another name. Took a couple of days for me to figure out it was the same person.

In my second post on the old board, I closed with my real name instead of with "learner", I sent an email asking if that could be changed (this was before there was edit capability) and Steve Ray replied that he would take care of it. So I guess I was on when he was still running the board.

This is a very interesting thread. Internet is such a huge phenomenon and still a very new thing. The history of Internet and software maintenance is very interesting to me. I have been lurking on a lot of different Catholic forums before I started posting here. Now this is the only one.

One of the reasons is that this board is very professionally run and well-considered (I’m not being nice here, compare with the first impression you get of other sites, and you will see what I mean). It is interesting to know more about how this came to be.

Are there any pictures of the old board?

If you go to the internet archive, you can find the front page of the forum for several dates. I've been here since, I think, sometime in the middle of 2000 or so.
