For me, for the last couple of months, it's been this one, recorded by lots of people, including.... (no Yoko!)

Orbison version is best. Thus spake Highlander.

But if you want to go mad, listen carefully to this.

As always, Orbison is primo. I got to see him in concert once. But, as a song stuck in one's mind .... ?

Negative the version by Nazareth is best, the surprising thing about Roy orbison's rendition is said it seems so emotionless especially odd given that he was known for his very emotional performances. Apparently the song just didn't do anything for him the version by Nazareth is much more intense and emotional and that person is also the most successful most popular and most well-known.

The early versions of the song are pretty much all surprisingly light and poppy. That's true of the Everly version. There was another mid-70' version by some guy I forget the name of that was pretty upbeat, too. And I agree, Orbison and the Everlys and the other guy just appeared not to understand what they were singing about. I would have guessed that Nazareth were the first to actually notice that it's not a very upbeat song, but in fact Emmylou and Gram were.

I won't get into an argument about whether Emmylou and Gram's version is better than Nazareth's (it is!), but I would guess that Nazareth noticed the song when they did largely because of Emmylou and Gram's version, which was released on the record Grievous Angel about a year before Nazareth recorded their version.

Orbison ... emotionless? I suppose different folks perceive emotion different ways delivered in different idioms and different spirits. I might agree that the arrangement behind Orbison is a bit bland. But Roy is, IMNSHO, never emotionless.

The Everly version is melancholic, I think. None of this detracts from Nazareth. Or Parsons and Harris.

Maybe a bit. Maybe I focus too much on the "I know it isn't true..." passage. But that just sounds pretty chipper in the Everly's version. It doesn't have much weight to it. But yeah, as a whole, it's not quite so upbeat as Wake Up Little Susie or something. Of course, that song doesn't have very peppy lyrics, either!

I think the song presents its performers with a choice .... sad, melancholic, defeated or agony and excruciation. Which makes it a great song ... it can be covered in many ways and forms and they are all good.

Here's another example:
