Cardinal George Pell says he holds no ill will towards his accuser and has thanked his family, friends and supporters after the unanimous decision of the High Court of Australia to quash his convictions for historical sex abuse offences.

“I hold no ill will toward my accuser, I do not want my acquittal to add to the hurt and bitterness so many feel; there is certainly hurt and bitterness enough,” said the cardinal in a statement.

“However my trial was not a referendum on the Catholic Church; nor a referendum on how Church authorities in Australia dealt with the crime of paedophilia in the Church.

“The point was whether I had committed these awful crimes, and I did not.”

Australia's Catholic bishops say Cardinal George Pell's acquittal will be devastating for many people but welcomed by those who believe in his innocence.

Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president and Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge said the result did not change the church's commitment to child safety.

"Today's outcome will be welcomed by many, including those who have believed in the cardinal's innocence throughout this lengthy process," Archbishop Coleridge said.

"We also recognise that the High Court's decision will be devastating for others.

"Many have suffered greatly through the process, which has now reached its conclusion."

Archbishop Coleridge said anyone with allegations of sexual abuse by church personnel should go to the police.

"The result today does not change the church's unwavering commitment to child safety and to a just and compassionate response to survivors and victims of child sexual abuse," he said.

That is a very weird way of putting it. That sounds like they're saying 'he's probably innocent but we'll stab him in the back just to be safe.'

I guess he will celebrate Happy Easter in the Carmelite monastery at Kew.

Just like you and me, they don't know if he is entirely innocent or not. The appeal court didn't say he is entirely innocent, they ruled unanimously that there was sufficient doubt about the guilty verdict to overturn it. That's not the same as establishing his innocence. If he is entirely innocent - which he may well be, for all we know - it's just very unfortunate for him that there remains some doubt about it, but Australia's Catholic bishops can't pretend they know he is entirely innocent if they don't know that.

There's no way in h**l he's guilty. The "evidence" consisted of changing testimony from one person that was entirely in conflict with all the other testimony and evidence.

And in conflict with basic common sense too, don't forget that. I

would love to know how it is possible for a priest to molest a child while he's in his vestments in a room with with an open door and several people looking in while it takes place.

The conviction was a classic example of a kangaroo court.

Including the second "victim" who told his mother, before he died, that he was not molested.

when you hear the actual facts of the case the fact that it ended in conviction or that it even went to trial in the first place just seems crazy it's like something that you'd expect to happen in a totalitarian state not in a modern liberal democracy that's supposed to be based on the rule of law and offers due process to the accused.

The Cardinal has moved to Sydney (by car - 8 hours away) and after the 2 week quarantine on moving between states he will live there.
Police have some concerns about his safety in his home state.

I'm delighted with the quashing of the sentence.

Of course they didn't, they are not able to do that. Courts - at least in countries where an adversarial system is used for criminal trials - are for establishing guilt, not innocence.

For myself, I don't have any doubt about Card. Pell's innocence; the accuser's story smacks of something made up by someone who hasn't the faintest idea about liturgical matters.
