Today marks two years.

I suppose that mourning is both universal and unique. In my case, what hurts a lot is that my son suffered due to mental illness and its domino effect of complications. What also hurts is the knowledge and memory of all of us failing him. I've been told by those in a position to know or understand that it's not our fault. But all families let each other down at times, and all people fail to love perfectly. So in that sense, it is true that many times, my son did not receive what he craved or needed.

So while other people mourn the loss of a vibrant, young life taken soon, a life filled with unfulfilled promise, I mourn my son who suffered. I mourn a young man whose Lent of 2018 began on Ash Wednesday in the mental ward of a hospital, and ended on Easter Sunday when an ambulance was called.

Please remember my Gabriel in your prayers today.

My parents died of cancer, and I can still find things to blame myself for. :( I pray for the repose of his soul and peace for you.

Holding you close today in prayer.

We all blame ourselves for the losses of our dearest loves. Find a moment to remember the good memories.

Today is particularly poignant for me as well. I lost my father on this date on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. As fate would have it, the pastor wouldn't permit a funeral Mass because they were getting ready for Easter. If he had died today, the pastor would have had a much better excuse.
