When's the best time to put up Christmas decorations? A homeowners association in San Antonio thinks it knows the answer, and it's not now.

Claudia and Nick Simonis put out a handful of Christmas decorations November 1. Three days later, they received a letter from their homeowners association, Diamond Association Management & Consulting, demanding they take down the decorations until closer to the holiday. DAMC did not respond to CNN's requests for comment via phone and email.

The couple didn't see the letter until this week. But once they did, they were in shock.

"I felt shocked and angered," Nick Simonis told CNN. "The HOA has so much time on their hands."

Nick Simonis said the couple has plans to put up Christmas lights this weekend and to continue decorating their house regardless.
"I don't think this should be an issue," neighbor Charles Minton, who has already put some penguins and a large "Merry Christmas" ornament in his front yard, told CNN affiliate WOAI. "These are the holidays. This is what we do. We take care of our neighbors. That's what a neighborhood is about."

I'd be willing to bet that the Simonises are the type to take down their Christmas decorations on December 26 ...

How much do they pay micro-mangers nowadays? I also wonder if the individual decorations must be pre-approved.

I put my little tree in the front window on Christmas Eve, and a wreath outside. I was taught that usually after Epiphany to take the decor down. I don't live in a housing development that has a Homeowners Association.

The whole thing about putting Christmas decor out early started due to commercialization in the stores to go shopping for Christmas.

Although, I don't think it should be anyone's business if some people put the decor out early.....it usually is much colder closer to Christmas.

Let each household decide what's best for them, but my preference is to at least wait for December. Enjoy one holiday at a time.

The article referenced highlights another issue, that of HOA's telling people what they can and cannot do with their own property. Personally, I find it surprising that there are still people who don't understand that this is to be expected. Homeowners "surrender" their rights, expecting that their neighborhood will be more pleasant due to their neighbors having surrendered their own rights. To each their own, but it's not my cup of tea.

Right. This is what HOA's do. If you've got one, generally speaking that means you've agreed to live by their rules.

case in point... we've got a fred sanford type junkman living behind us and one house down.... he is is violation for a minimum of two rules of the hoa... 1) thou shalt not operate a business out of your home 2) that shalt maintain an attractive home site

kinda hard to do that when there are old appliances and all matter of "junk" he has picked up from God knows where sitting on his lawn, by the side of his house, and in one of several trucks that sit in his drive way or in front of his house... i'm sure that does wonders for the property values  :nooo:

i do not know why they do not exercise the power of their organization and force him to cease and desist...but it's been like that for as long as they have lived there...and that's been a long long time :?

i on the other hand have been written up for having the height of my golden euonymous bushes too close to the porch overhang, for not having maintained a well kept lawn and flower bed, for having broken pickets in my fence and for storing a non-functional vehicle in the drive way ..... are you kidding me?????!!!!!1 c'mon man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a buddy subject to a HOA. Across the street lives a family, expanded by double or triple every weekend, who park up and down the street ... and change their car oil ... in the street. Although there are signs up requiring parking on only one side of the street ... so emergency vehicles can get through a sharp curve ... the family ignored them. And had parked blocking my buddy's driveway.

My buddy had called the HOA multiple times ... asking for enforcement. The standard answer is that the HOA office has to observe the violation in person ... and they don't work on weekends. When my mild and meek buddy insisted, the person on the other end said his attitude was threatening and that she might have to report him to the HOA and call the police.

So, he called the police ... reported the parking safety issue ... and the cops showed up and ticketed the offending cars. The next week an HOA inspector arrived at my buddy's house and wrote him up on his yard, his driveway, the side of his house, his car parking (in his driveway!), and his garage door. Then the family next door arrived to yell at him about their right to park anywhere they wanted to and that he could drive around the cars blocking his driveway.

Wonder who told the family that he had ratted them out to the police.

He "corrected" his writeups and informed the HOA, in writing, that he would call the cops every time there was a parking safety issue -- citing the fact that he'd reported the unsafe parking to the HOA. Hasn't had an issue since, but the family now glares at him every time they see him.

Honestly I don't think lights should be turned on until Gaudete Sunday, and until then decorations should really be reserved.

That this HOA or that has been inconsistent, hypocritical, or abusive in enforcing its rules is not at all relevant to the fact that the HOA mentioned in the OP is correct in this case.

People complain about putting up Christmas decorations early.

I'm already drunk for St Patrick's Day.
