Edit: Scrap the former question. It ought to be "which is less unclean?"

1) Soiled gloves
2) Dirty gloves
3) Both terms potentially cover a range from very slightly "unclean" to where the ratio of filth to glove favours the filth!

Obviously Mrs. Timmy's answer preceded the epoch-making change of thread title and question.

“Soiled” implies that a visible stain of some kind exists. Something can be dirty without being noticeably soiled, for example, a floor. Clear as mud?

ETA: if something is indeed filthy, say it’s filthy and avoid any ambiguity.

I received input from a friend who suggested "soiled" as the less severe word. So it is just about as clear as mud, yes!

I'm more concerned not to exclude "slightly dirty" than to explicitly include "filthy". Filthy will sort of be included by default when the lesser uncleanness is included.

Actually, this thread ought to be called "which is less unclean"?

I'm tired. I'm going to bed. I would dash, but I do not know how to make a dash with the keyboard of my new computer.
