Is immerse the right word if an object is lowered into a body of water up to a certain point. I mean, could you say a glove was immersed in water up to the wrist line, or a person immersed up to the neck?

What would be alternative words?

It is correct, but it has the implication of deeply ... as submerged. I think that, to be clear, you might be precise ... as you have said.

"I was immersed up to my neck."

I think "immersed up to a certain point in/into water" (I don't know the exact point) would do the trick, no?

Or would "immersed in/into water up to a certain point" be better?

I'm thinking "in" if you are talking of a state and "into" if talking of the action that puts the object into that state of immersion?

Doom, it's a glove! It's a glove!

You could say the glove was partially immersed in water, up to the wrist line.

Yes, "in" as a location or a state; "into" implies movement to that location -- passing from outside to inside.

He put the thingy into the water. It is in the water now.
