I'm afraid I'm not at home with idiomatic English. Can posters please tell me what they think of the book, and why?

Norman Vincent Peale was one of the early pioneers of the “name it and claim it” brand of theology that has spawned the likes of Joel Osteen and other toxic, usually Protestant, ministers that have wreaked havoc on modern-day Christianity. When I said “kill it with fire,” I was not being facetious. The best thing you can do with that book is burn it so that no one can be influenced by, at least, that one copy.

ETA: here’s an interesting take on how he’s damaged a lot more than Christianity: https://www.newsweek.com/2016/09/23/pos ... 98447.html

My father wants me to read these books. Preferably both. He says so because he thibks these will motivate me to succeed.

Which of these is the lesser evil, so to speak?

Covey is Mormon, for one thing.

Is your father thinking you are unmotivated for some reason?

Is the "as it is" plain meaning of the book incompatible with Catholicism?

That's a hard question. I don't know what to say.
I concede that I do not work as hard as he wants me to
. Also, he wants me to be motivated for college, since medical college will be hard.
He is a diehard fan of these books and has been recommending them for a long time.
He has read them.

I don't remember anything especially wrong with 7 habits. But it's been an awfully long time since I read it.

Why not ask your priest or a spiritual director what Catholic spiritual books would be good?

My father doesn't want me to read a book on Catholic spirituality. He wants me to read a motivational/self-help book.

There is a lot of good in Matthew Kelly's books!

Father Obi must have picked a good one.

If it’s Matthew Kelly, it’s good. Period.
