Is this a non issue?

There are some reputable sites making this to be a very weird thing for him to be holding.
Can anyone verify if this is what they're making it out to be.... or is it stretching to just add more acrimony at Pope Francis?

That is a good question.

Doing a little Google search on "What is a Stang?" I find this site:

The Stang

I guess a couple of questions would be:

1. Does Pope Francis actually understand what it is that he is carrying? Sometimes, in regards to the world, he seems like a naive babe in the woods, especially in dealing with the media

2. Why carry this instead of a Crucifix?

3. Was this some sort of gift and he's trying to honor the gift by carrying it?

4. Finally, why not just carry a Crucifix and avoid all this contention?

People want to know.

So a stang really is something that is used in witchcraft settings.
I'm hoping it's something other than that....
but like you said: why not just carry a crucifix?

Dowsers, aka Water Witchers, also use a forked stick (divining rod) for finding underground water or where to drill a well.

Apparently some young people made it for him and would have felt bad if he didn't use it. So he's using it at the Youth Synod.

The trouble with asking yourself "how much worse could it get?" is that you'll often get an answer pretty quickly.

Thanks for the info.

So, to call it a "Stang" (which seems to be used only in reference to witch craft) isn't really all that fair.

Only a pony car on steroids. Or, as my dad’s State Trooper friend used to say, “prima facie evidence of speeding.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelby_Mu ... prov=sfti1

'Stang' in Norwegian just means pole or stick.

So in Norway, all sticks are used for witchcraft
