When God made H. Ross Perot, He broke the mold. The man was a bona-fide hero. I will never forget what he did to get his EDS people out of Iran during their revolution.

There is that.

I mostly remember him for handing Clinton the presidency and saddling us with Hillary's cackle for years. And who could forget his wacky excuse for pulling out of the second run? And then he jumped back in!

According to John Mecham's biography "Destiny and Power" a biography of George HW Bush, after Bush was fired as CIA director following the election big Jimmy Carter, Ross Perot called and offered him a job. When Bush declined, Perot got angry and said "nobody says no to me" and promised revenge.

Bush believed that this was the reason Perot ran in 1992.

Amen.

Although kudos for taking care of his people.

President George H. W. Bush's 2d candidacy was also hurt by not holding to his pledge of "Read my lips: no new taxes."

Exactly. The world's most famous campaign promise, right in the toilet, along with his second term that was all but guaranteed after Desert Storm. What a bitter disappointment.

Can we not avoid devolving into partisan bickering over nonsense when the subject is a man's death?

Some leave legacies. Some remaining evaluate the deceased on the basis of those legacies. Some see that evaluation as bickering.

Some don't.

We are not engaged in 'partisan bickering', we are trying to assess Perot's place in history and since he was best known for his presidential runs in 1992 and 1996, assessing his place in history means examining his politics and influence, it is wholly appropriate that we should do this.

Then I am free to say a pox on such nonsense. I am not going to fault anyone for running for office. Heck, he was largely successful in raising the issue of balancing the budget, forcing both Clinton and Republicans to offer something.

I, for one, think one reason for the decay in political life is favorite betrayal, we get no where because we vote more against then for. This is a natural tendency in most voting systems, especially ours. It is provincial and a cancer, and hardly in line with solid ethical thinking. Indeed, Catholic moralists have generally supported voting for a worthy candidate though unviable than voting for a lesser evil (choosing the lesser evil is a principle alien to Catholic thought)

If you think the proper reaction to news of a death is time to air partisan grievances (and for George HW Bush of all people), then I think that base. But if we are to be base, then it is fitting that such destructive views be scorned and trashed

It is fully fitting to discuss Perot ' s place in history and the events of his life upon his death.

I think you are guilty of what you are complaining about.

Perhaps it would make more sense to do the "assessing of legacy" in the Political Asylum.

I simply respected the guy. Politics aside, he was a man who achieved much, was tough as nails, was a Christian, and from a public persona, very like able.

And yes, he likely cause Bush to lose and Clinton to win. But because Clinton won the election and cheesed off the country after a year or so, the house changed hands after like 80 years or something and between the two, did some good things.

So from that perspective, perhaps it was providential Perot came along when he did?

Again, not picking a political side. Just think he was one of the rare individuals that it seems the US produces more than many other countries.
