Usually, we understand the Beloved Disciple to be St. John himself.

Since it is clear that the Beloved Disciple was an Apostle (being present at the last supper) and at the Cross is said to be the eye-witness to events recorded in the Gospel of John, this identity seems very likely.

At another level it is my understanding that "the beloved disciple" by extension is also all of us, meaning that it was used as such so that the reader or hearer of the Gospel stories would place themselves in the place of John and see and experience Christ as he did.

I beg to dissent with that, except as a very extended application. To the best of my knowledge, it was created and popularized by those who wished to deny any connection of the Gospel to the apostle John.

I never meant my comment to preclude John's very real authorship, only that it seems that John's intention was to get himself out of the way and let the reader/hearer step into his shoes, so-to-speak.

I had no suspicions about you--just a caution against running too far with that theory.
