There's an old story that might or might not be true, but it has a good point. As the story goes, the RCMP anti-counterfeiting unit never shows trainees false bills. They study only the real thing so that they will never get confused about what the real thing is.

Unless you have a professional reason to study modern dissent (and I don't see how you do), why expose your mind to falsehoods?

True. However, a recent article spoke negatively of the Christian definition of marriage as a sacrament citing history in which it wasn't recognized as a Sacrament until the 1100s. This is information that I can check to verify and by my working to verify it I can learn about my faith. As a recent convert, I know that I have a tremendous more to learn.

You learn from the truth.

Would you send your child to school to and ask the teachers to lie to him so he can learn more by disproving them?

You can often find out what is being published in the National "Catholic" Reporter by reading Fr. Z.'s web site: WDTPRS. Don't waste your hard-earned money on a subscription.

Start with the Catechism, the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, the Encyclicals, the Lives of the Saints, the Summa, writings of Kreeft and Chesterton and Belloc, read everything that Pope Benedict XVI has written... then, when you run out of that start with the ECFs.

Catechism - read
Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church - not read
Encyclicals - many read
Lives of the Saints - have read most of Butler's text
Summa - don't know where to begin
Kreeft - not read
Chesterton - don't know where to begin
Belloc - don't know who this person is
ECF's - read many of them, and have the 3 volume set by Jurgens.

I just started to read the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, thanks for the suggestion. :D

It is one of the lesser known treasures.

I wish you lived close by, we have a massive parish library.

Oh, add to your list Frank Sheed and Bishop Fulton Sheen.

I have heard of Frank Sheed and his writings and absolutely enjoy Fulton Sheen. He was an important reason why I converted. I really enjoyed listening and watching him on EWTN. I would love to have the videos of his presentations, maybe some day.

I have quite an extensive collection of various books on various topics, including all my readings from the theological studies I went through in school. I am aiming to get LOGOS software within the next year or so to help aid me in my studies. I'm really jealous of your massive parish library. I use mine, which isn't very big, and I could park myself in there for days and be just fine. :D

It doesn't look like anyone took the publications last week so this week I grabbed them all.

They'll make nice kindling for a bonfire.
