The Catholic Encyclopedia says he was born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387.

No one is actually certain. There are different stories, but none verifiable.

He was of a Roman family in Britain. How much Roman blood versus Briton I don't know (English didn't exist as such yet, no angles and saxons invading)

I would think that he would see himself as Roman

He became Irish, of course.

I did watch St. Patrick's Mass from Knock, Co. Mayo, Ireland on EWTN:

It's a mixture of English and Irish.

Welsh according to my (Welsh) sources - he was kidnapped by pirates from Wales and taken to Ireland.
