For all ya'll martial arts fans, this is a pretty good flick. NOT if you like mega-wire work and people running fifty feet up in a bamboo forest on air. This is a story about a real man, named Ip Man. He was the founder of Wing Chun Kung Fu and incidently had a student many years after this movie is set, who's name was Jun Fan--Bruce Lee to us Yanks.

Wing Chun is an inside game, not a long-range art, and it's not pretty so it hasn't got near the attention that the northern styles have got with their high kicks and animal-imitating postures. It's high time it did get some screen time and the story is well-done. Actually, the acting is very good and the cinematography is great. My biggest complaint is what you often get with Chinese movies of this stature--Chinese communist propaganda sneaks in here and there, but that's to be expected, as these movies are made first and foremost for the Chinese people.

Get it at your Redbox or Netflix, or Blockbuster if you like paying more. :)

Ratings-wise, no bad language (that was translated), no nudity, but definitely some fight violence and war violence (portraying the Japanese occupation of China prior to and during WWII). Also a strong pro-family story.

Oh, and Ip Man 2 is out later this year and will get into the Hong Kong years, which is when Bruce Lee shows up as one of Ip Man's many students. It looks to be another good movie, same actor (Donnie Yen) and featuring the grand old fat man, Sammo Hung lookin' great.
