For you Eastern Christians out there, or anyone who knows:

Why are Mary Magdalene and some other saints called 'equal to the Apostles'?

Equal?

Mary Magdalene is known as 'the apostle to the apostles' but I have never heard her called 'equal to the apostles'

The title "Equal-to-Apostles" is used more in the Eastern Churches, but is not unknown in the West.

A brief article is found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal-to-apostles

More info can be found by Google with English words or the transliterated Greek isapostolos. A math-man ought to have no difficulty with the "is-" or "iso-" root for "equal", e.g. isosceles triangle.

Ok, Wikipedia states, "The title is bestowed as a recognition of these saints' outstanding service in the spreading and assertion of Christianity, comparable to that of the original apostles." But it does not give a source for this assertion.

Light of the East? Can you shed light on this?

I don't think there is any official reason why the title is given. It is kind of like how some Popes or Saints are called "the great". "Equal to the Apostles" is just a title that tradition has bestowed on certain Saints of high stature.

it is equivalent to the West calling a Saint an Apostle. Like Saint Patrick, Apostle to the Irish.
