Saying this right off the bat.

THIS WILL NOT TURN INTO A DEBATE.

All that I am making this topic for is for people to ask me (an Atheist) questions. Nothing more. Also, sorry for being away for a few days, been having a life. Yeah I know. Who has a life nowadays?

Oddly sunny. Had an awesome thunderstorm two days ago, though.

That's more like the question I was expecting!

To my knowledge, there is no evidence for any sort of higher power.

Sadly I have not seen one. Last one I say was Get Him To The Greek. I only have one thing to say to you.

"Stroke the furry walls."

When you drive through a neighborhood and see a church on almost every corner, or you hear of someone claiming that their incurable disease was miraculously cured through prayer...have you ever at least thought to yourself, "what if?"

Have you heard about the new group that is raising funds to go to the Amazon to burn down rain forests?

I think you're misunderstanding me. I am not adamanent about "There is no God." If someone were to give me proof to the contrary, I would examine it, get others to check it as well, cover all my bases, and consider it. I always ask myself what if. Doesn't change my opinion.

No, I have not heard of such a group.

What do you think of the work they are doing...they also talk about teaching the local people to burn forests as well.

The only proper answer to this response is 'just what are you willing to accept as 'evidence'?

Because here is the thing....I think that whenever the issue is non-divine in nature, the standard of proof that people are willing to accept that something exists is usually pretty low.

I think we have very interesting experimental evidence of how much evidence people usually need to be convinced that something exists.....

Ever seen the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey?

What was it that convinced everyone, not just the people in the movie, but movie audiences everywhere, that aliens existed?

The discovery of a giant black monolith. That's all the proof of 'intelligent life' that people needed, a big black ROCK.

To my knowledge, no one watching the movie has ever suggested that this big black rock was anything less than definitive proof that alien life existed. It's pretty clear....there is a big black rock so aliens exist....

Or look at SETI, the Search for Extra Terrestrial Life....

They scan the skies looking for radio signals which might indicate a transmission by aliens....and what do they regard as 'sufficient proof' that aliens would exist?

Just a few numbers....if they could find a radio transmission which contained, say, the first few digits of the decimal expansion of Pi this would be regarded as definitive proof of alien life

A few digits of Pi....a big black ROCK....that's all the proof that people need

And yet.....for God....no amount of evidence is considered sufficient.

Odd to say the least.

Nope, Agnostics, I think at least, believe in a God, just not a specific one. I deny the existence of a God until it can be proven otherwise.

Odd, however considering how large the universe is, the number of galaxies, stars, etc, it is a safe assumption to assume that somewhere (probably) there is life. Who knows, I personally would like to think there is some other civilization out there, if for nothing else but to know how awesome that is.

Never seen that movie, though.

Personally, I think the argument goes exactly the other way: given the EXTREME improbability that ANY kind of life should exist ANYWHERE at all, the probability that it could arise in more than one place has to be regarded as extremely low.

Improbable things happen, they generally don't happen more than once though. I doubt we'll ever see a pitcher throw 5 consecutive perfect games, and if we did, we would conclude that he was cheating, not that it was something really amazing.

If life exists elsewhere in the universe, this is like a pitcher pitching five consecutive perfect games, we should immediately draw the conclusion that 'the fix is in' and that someone is cheating. The game is rigged.
