Quote:
Dengue is the most common virus transmitted by mosquitoes, infecting 50 million to 100 million people every year and killing 25,000 of them.

It can cause classic flu-like symptoms but can also take on a hemorrhagic form that causes internal and external bleeding and sudden death. Companies are working on a vaccine but there is not any effective drug to treat it.

Dengue was eradicated in the United States in the 1940s but a few locally acquired U.S. cases have been confirmed along the Texas-Mexico border since the 1980s. More cases have been reported recently in Mexico and the Caribbean.

After 27 cases of dengue were reported in Florida in 2009, scientists from the CDC and the Florida Department of Health took blood samples from 240 randomly chosen Key West residents.

Of these, 5 percent had active dengue infections or antibodies to the virus, showing they had been infected, the researchers told the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases being held in Atlanta.

It may not have been brought by immigrants. Key West has an open harbor. Also there is a naval base.

A great many tourists go to Key West. Not all of them are from the USA.

So unless your closed border policy includes eliminating tourism and isolating naval personnel, unless you are advocating a complete closing of the US - imports, travel, etc., the possibility of dengue coming from the Caribbean to the US or from Africa to the US is always there.

Puerto Rico.

We have Aedes albopictus(asian tiger mosquito) here and throughout the South which can transmit Dengue. I know the ones here can anyway.

In order to get a tourism visa to visit the US you have to be properly vaccinated, it is part of the process. So, yes, you can blame it on illegal immigrants.

No, you don't. There are no vaccination requirements to enter the United States as a tourist.

Also, if memory serves, there is no vaccine for Dengue.

Not to mention the fact that a vaccination requirement for a country is to protect the tourist from getting a local disease while visiting, not to protect the country the tourist is visiting from a disease they may bring in.

More likely because DDT has been pressed out of use. Malaria has made a huge comeback in Africa as well for the same reason.

Not to mention bed bugs. I live in fear of getting them. They are expensive to get rid of.

But worth it! One of the most common ways to get them at hotels is by keeping your shoes and luggage near the bed.

It seems logical that bugs of all kinds could come to the US in planes, on cruise ships, in shipping containers...

That's how this country acquired fire ants, via a cargo ship.

And for a small fee, Bomby will come over and take care of the problem for you...

(admittedly, it might involve a small suitcase and some sort of highly radioactive substance inside, and you may never live there again, but hey, the insects would be gone, right? )

Ships and people entering the US are supposed to be screened for carrying bugs and diseases.

That Customs has screwed things up before doesnt justify ceasing the whole effort.

If we did that then things would get much worse much more quickly.
