[joke]

Although Spain defeated the Netherlands in the World Cup finals, the bishops of Spain are facing a serious Vatican investigation.

In a shameless effort to procure divine favor for their nation's football/soccer team, the Spanish bishops changed the Sunday liturgical Gospel for July 11th from the standard Lucan one to one from Matthew 16. In addition they insisted that the reading be in English and from the New American Bible (NAB), thus "cursing" the Netherlands from any chance to win the match.

The verse in question:
<Matthew 16:18>And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

Spain has a player name "Peter." Pedro Rodriguez. ("Pedro" is "Peter" you know, just how "Giovani" is "John")

That would be Juan, in Spanish.
