During the 60s I continued to listen to Rock-N - Roll but started shifting to Country Music.

Though I first heard the song in the late 1960's, I am somewhat convinced one of the biggest boosts to Rock 'n' Roll (and rock guitar) may have been Danny Cedrone's guitar solo on Bill Haley & His Comets Rock around the clock in the early '50's.

The "new country" sounds to me like a mix of pop rock and adult contemporary with a twang in the voice.

Country is now where rock resides. As other genres captured pop and Top 40, rock migrated. If you listen to country, take out the dobro, ignore the common country licks, you can hear the rock.

The one thing that distinguishes country from rock--apart from the dobro and occasional fiddle--is that it's still relatively common for country musicians to speak openly about God. They may tend to be fully in line with pop culture's besetting sins, but at least they haven't gone all the way to the point of thinking that religion is just irrelevant, or of being ashamed to speak of Christ. You're not going to hear rock musicians, as a rule, bust out into How Great Thou Art (no doubt exceptions can be found), but a country singer may be right on the edge of that, any ol' time.

There was a day rock bands like Kansas where more common place and one could understand their wonder of God. Today, I search for such.

A bulk of "new country" is a simply party-time (with your pickup and a girl with short shorts). Yet, there is the song here and there that hits a chord. I found a song written by Neil Thrasher and performed by Jason Aldean - Fly Over States a bit out of the norm. Appreciating what God created. Good stuff (pop rock in Em), Imo.

Though, there's always the country guitar slingers - like Vince Gill; who never shy away from his faith.

Speaking of the music out of Nashville today, I heavily lean towards the exceptional guitar picking of Brent Mason and Vince Gill or Daniel Donato. The guitar is alive and well.

I'm not talking about the recordings of young country musicians, since I know next to nothing about them. I'm talking, I guess, about the culture of country music. Imagine going to a standard rock concert. I went to many when I was a young man. I never once heard anything resembling an old hymn, I can promise you that. But as I say, with country musicians, you just never know if they're going to decide it's time to sing an old song from church, or an old country song from the 60's or earlier--think of Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me Lord," or any of a thousand songs by Johnny Cash or the Carter Family or Roy Acuff or whatever. I don't know if Jason Aldean sings old spirituals at his concerts. No idea. But I sure wouldn't be surprised to find out he did. On the other hand, I'd be pretty darn stunned to hear that Katie Perry did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2T1csHUgF4 That's all I'm getting at.

The best concert I've ever attended was Alison Krauss. Her encore was acoustic -- her voice and two guitars. She just sang, simply and directly, shortened versions of about 8 old-timey hymns. It was gorgeous.

Most of my music list is Moody Blues (approx. 30).
After that there's (10) from the Bee Gees,
a tie of (5) from Rod Stewart, and Neil Diamond
another tie of (4) from Fleetwood Mac, and The Rolling Stones
and yet another tie (3): Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, and Tommy James & the Shondells
After that is onsies and twosies.

Modern country music is auto-tuned one-note junk, and I've got proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY8SwIvxj8o nar

The older I get, the more I get back to the roots: classical, blues, old-school country, American Standards, classic rock, even punk and BOTH British Invasions. If it came out after 1988 or so, forget it.

AND GIT OFF MY LAWN!

I can't say I have heard this song or artist prior to this (and I have listened to a lot of tracks).

I thought by definition, it's not a Rick Roll if you give a warning, anyway.

That depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

Well...that is not as bad as borrowing a classic rock vocal track and adding one's own guitar, bass and drum track (even if it does sound interesting).

To me, the epitome of rickrolling were the shred videos. Though he was banned from youtube - Santeri Ojala is now allowed to post again (Thank the Lord. Good guitar humor).
