Here is the simple topic brought up by a quote from St. Aquinas and the ideas of purgatory and human identity:

"I am not my soul" stated by Aquinas

Our identity is that of ensouled bodies in which we see that existential state as our substance and reality.

At death, the body and mind are separated, and the soul, if not perfected, goes to Purgatory.

This idea is discussed thoroughly in Personal identity and purgatory by David B. and Rose Hershenov. It is a very interesting article. Check it out.

I am not my soul, but I am not not my soul either. It seems to me that the authors miss this point.
