The "instrumentum laboris," or working document, for the Synod of Bishops on the Eucharist, to be held in Rome Oct. 2-23, was published by the Holy See on Thursday. (zenit.org)

The document can be found at the link below:

The text talks about globalization (sec. 8) and said:

Quote:
Unfortunately, globalization and technological progress have not lead to peace and greater justice between the rich nations and the pooer ones of the Third and Fourth Worlds.

The situation makes one think that, while the synod fathers are gathering, acts of vielence, terrorism and war will unfortunately continue in various parts of the world...

How prophetic, as they were preparing to publish this a couple days ago the attacks in London happend.

How much time are priests engaging in social activities instead of teaching the faith to children?

Quote:
Ongoing, intensive catechesis on the importance and oblicgation to participate at Holy Mass on Sundays and Holydays of Obligation needs to be encouraged...

Certain particular cChurches are witnessing a significant decline in the practice of faith and participation at Mass, prevalently amoung the young.

This should lead to a reflection on how much time pastors and catechists spend in teaching the faith to children and youth as compared to time in social activities.

On "distorted ideas" of the Council's teaching on the liturgy

Quote:
An increasingly secularized society has caused a weakening in the sense of mystery. This is witnessed in mis-interpretations and distorted ideas in the Council’s liturgical renewal, which has led to rites superficial in nature and devoid of spiritual significance. Nevertheless, some Christian communities have maintained a deep sense of mystery, so much so that the liturgy continues to have great meaning.

Entrusting Sunday Service to Lay People because of a Lack of Priests

Quote:
In rural areas, the scarcity of clergy in parishes has resulted in the celebration of Mass at certain times each month or even each year. In these situations, the practice of entrusting a Sunday service to lay people is unavoidable.

Entering into the mystery "depends" on how the liturgy is celebrated?

Quote:
People ought clearly be taught that entering into the mystery of the Eucharist depends on a liturgical celebration which is done with dignity, due preparation and, above all, faith in the mystery itself.

Thanks for providing the link. I saved a copy to my hard drive and will probably printout and read the document later.

It is important to remember that this is a working document for the October synod. What will be even more interesting is the document(s) which will come from the Synod and/or Pope Benedict after the Synod. One has only to remember (or read up the history of) the original working documents and the final conciliar documents from Vatican II, e.g. the one on Divine Revelation.

I was under the impression that "working" document meant for the work of the synod. This text came from a previous text already... I am not sure that there will be a 3rd or 4th text.
What do you know?

To quote Sgt. Schultz of "Hogan's Heroes": "I know nothing" specifically about the synod and the document.

My general understanding is that a "working document" is just the starting point for discussion at a synod, i.e. the bishops generally don't just start from scratch but work on and with such a starting point – unless it is decided that the starting point is too deficient and a decision is made to throw it out and start over.

The first version was called a Lineamenta. From the working document, there is no suggestion within it that there will be another document... i.e., they don't suggest that the point ot the synod is to produce a document. Maybe, I don't know. Maybe this is what they will use for the Synod, then they will produce a third document.

Edward is correct. What you have is a starting position paper.
