In the book length interview between Cardinal Angelo Scola and Balthasar, Test Everything, Hold on to What is Good, Scola asked:

Nowadays one frequently hears the assertion--recently championed by Hans Kung--that the questions prompted by the Englightenment have remained unanswered by the Church...

Balthasar responds:

Quote:
...About Hans Kung I merely wish to say that he is absolutely entitled to take the stance of a litberal Protestant with its correspondingly pronounced anti-Roman mentality. What is questionable, however, is his insistence on still calling himself a Catholic.

I have also read that Von Balthasar was very critical of Rahner's "anonymous Christian" theory.

This is an article, if you are intersted, by Bevil Bramwell, who used to teach at Franciscan and is now at Ave Maria, on the Balthasar/Rahner debate on the "Anonymous Christian"

A Hans Kung joke....

One day, the Pope dies, and the conclave is unable to come to an agreement on who the next Pope should be, so after several weeks of deadlock, they decide to elect Hans Kung. Not being a cardinal, Kung is not present, so they call him at his home and offer him the Papacy. Thinking about it for a few minutes, Kung answers 'Look, I am grateful for your kind and generous offer, but I am afraid that I simply cannot accept it. You see, the moment I become Pope, I shall immediately cease to be infallible.'
