I am discussing Dominus Iesus with a Southern Baptist, and have run up against the statement that the Church of Christ subsists in the Catholic Church. Rather than wading though the polemic that surrounds Lumen Gentium right now, I'd like to look at subsistence out of context. Can anyone explain what subsistence means in philosophy/theology?

I am currently taking a course in Ecclesiology from Franciscan University. Here is an article that covers, in great detail, the use of the term "subsists in" as the Fathers of Vatican II intended in Lumen Gentium #8.

I am glad it is online. I think it does a great job using the relationes to get at exactly what the Council (and thus Dominus Iesus) intended.
