... for life wisdom, taking good decisions, gratitude, appreciating beauty etc (as opposed to a more academic thing).

What books would you recommend?

Those aren't really philosophy books, but frankly western philosophy is an academic discipline and when it's done well it's done fairly abstractly and technically, and isn't going to be what you're asking about. Even accessible stuff like Mortimer Adler is abstract.

Is there a way to get a free downloadable version (any format) or a read-online version of this book :)

You should consider broadening your horizons beyond books catalogued under "philosophy." For example, pick out an autobiographical book by someone you admire.

I ask for a friend. She has read a lot of autobiographies.

My Daily Bread: A Summary of The Spiritual Life by Anthony J. Paone, S.J. (1954)

From the Foreword.

“The work here presented is a summary of spiritual doctrine so simplified and arranged that everyone can come to a knowledge and practice of the spiritual life… This book must be read, not only with the head, but with the heart. We must think and pray. This daily exercise will transform belief into realization, theory into practice… May it help souls to persevere in the holy resolutions which they make at the time of confession, Holy Communion, missions, retreats, or any moment of grace.”

It is definitely a book "for life wisdom, taking good decisions, gratitude, appreciating beauty."

In my life of two steps forward, one step back – my copy is well worn.

I think there’s one listed on that topic by McInerny. You’ll have to browse.
