Post subject:  On body positivity

Should we "accept and love" our body? Should we be concerned about our physical appearance? What are your thoughts on saying that oneself is beautiful?

Are fat people discriminated against? Do they have emotional hurt because of this?

Yes, many are discriminated against.

Not all “fat people” are the same, but yes, many are emotionally hurt because of the way they are treated for being “fat”.

I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “accept and love”. I think we should be grateful for the body we have, but that doesn’t mean we should never try to improve our appearance. If you have crooked teeth, for example, there’s no harm in getting them straightened.

You shouldn’t be over-concerned about your appearance to the point where you think it’s the most important thing. The person inside your body is who you really are. When you lose sight of who you really are, that’s when you may become over-concerned about things like physical appearance which are superficial. But superficial doesn’t necessarily mean bad, as long as you see things in perspective. There’s nothing wrong in looking good and feeling good about looking good.

If you are an 80-year-old monk in a monastery, I don’t think you should be too concerned about your appearance, but if you are a young man hoping to attract a girlfriend, then it’s only natural that you would be concerned enough about your appearance to make the best of yourself. But make the best of your appearance while at the same time remembering that it’s not the most important thing, it’s not who you really are. You could be severely disfigured and disabled in a car crash tomorrow and you would still be the person you really are inside your body and no less lovable.

It’s important to have healthy self-esteem, by whatever way you can. I think it’s much more common and much easier to have unhealthy low self-esteem than to have too much egotistical self love, but the latter is also possible. Just as we need to eat a healthy amount of nutritional food, not too little and not too much, we need a healthy amount of self esteem, self regard, self love, self satisfaction with appearance, not too little and not too much. It’s a question of balance and awareness, of oneself and others.

A lot more could be said, your questions are good questions but very general.
