Bad, only in so far that he seems to have a habit……at the very least, of being ambiguous and causing confusion.

Do you really think Francis is encouraging idolatry or that he condones it? Really?

You'll note I didn't use either word. I said, "countenanced," and if you have a better word for what went on at the synod, I'd love to hear it.

Wow. Just . . . wow.

Look, I know you think you measured your words and that you believe you've enough nuance to make this a justifiable claim. But you just accused the Pope of condoning idoloatry.

Wow.

I can't do this anymore.

Are you under some kind of impression that the pontiff is .... I dunno how to say it.... perfectly perfect and infallible 24/7/365 or something? That he is above reproach?

Where's the pearl-clutching emoticon around here?

I just read an article that the Pope is considering a category of ecological sin to be added to the Catechism.

Now we have sin against the earth?

I just got off the phone with an old friend of mine who is quite bent out of shape over this. Taking me for one who is more knowledgeable about such matters, I advised him to take a deep breath and relax. Granted, news emanating from and about the Vatican is often twisted, the present pope's equivocations do not settle things definitively. His news source was a guest host on Rush Limbaugh. I took all this with a grain of salt. First, my old buddy has a penchant for only hearing part of the story. Second, I'm often disappointed with anything talk show hosts report on the Church, let alone Pope Francis, even conservative ones. None of them are Catholic, and so are less attuned to how things work.

In other words, don't believe everything you hear about the pope. Many people twist things for their own ends. The validated stuff is bad enough without adding more.

So far, the only thing I could find touching the notion that denial of global warming is a mortal sin was a report of Pope Francis saying that "history will be the judge of our actions." Well, fine by me. History isn't going to pronounce "Depart from me, you evildoer!"
