I read the Epistle at a Ukrainian Catholic Church this weekend, and in their translation of Hebrews 12 it refers to Jesus as the "aim" of the spiritual life.

This seems to me an articulation of the principle of final cause, ie. we act for some end, and in the case of meritorious spiritual actions that end is Jesus.

But then I realized, I do not really know what that means, even though I've heard it my whole life. "Jesus is the purpose of life" has not made a lot of sense to me. How can a person be an end of an intentional action? A person is not accomplished by acting, so in what respect can they be the aim of an action?

It's a verbal shorthand for union with Him. That's my take, anyhow.

So beyond not committing mortal sins and receiving the sacraments, how does one actively work towards union in daily life?
