Am I wrong for being suspicious about the reality of intrinsic evils, versus just regular evils? I'm not sure what adding "intrinsic" as a qualifier does to the evil of an action.

Am I missing something here?

Intrinsic evil is wrong in itself, regardless of circumstances and motives.

'Intrinsic' means " belonging to the essential nature or constitution of a thing". Not all evils are intrinsic evils, for example, stealing is normally wrong, but it is not intrinsically wrong. If you are starving and there are literally no other options, it would not be wrong to steal food to prevent starvation.

So, if something is wrong, but not intrinsically, that means there are situations, however narrowly defined, where it might be morally permissible, but if it is intrinsically wrong, there are absolutely no circumstances where it might be morally permissible.

Thanks for helping. I have a few follow up questions.

1. How do actions have essential natures? I understand that things have essences, but how do actions have them?

2. Are there intrinsic goods then as well?
