Wisconsin bishop threatens denial of sacraments for 'rumors and gossip'

http://ncronline.org/news/faith-parish/ ... and-gossip

I don't believe that Vatican II pronounced that Protestants were lost, as regards to their salvation. Secondly, I didn't think that it was a requirement that altar servers consist of men and women.

Be aware that this article is in the National Catholic Reporter, which is openly hostile to any exercise of authority on the part of any male with an official role in the Church.

Is this Catholic newspaper considered to be liberal in its reporting?

Back to the story. The priests that were brought to the parish from Spain. The story also quotes on of the priests as saying that Vatican II was misinterpreted, when changes were made. Are they being too conservative or simply being faithful Catholic priests?

I am not in a position to know for myself; I do know enough about Bishop Morlino to trust his judgment.

Having lived in the diocese of Madison, WI I can attest that the Bishop is truly a light shining in a very liberal city. He is constantly attacked in the media for his positions regarding Church beliefs.

If the story is correct and one of the priests high-fived a young child after the child said that non-Catholics go to hell, because they aren't Catholic, then that is certainly not in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.

Of course not, but hurt feelings are sure to follow as the Church restores her traditional practices.

What did I miss? How are we restoring our traditional practices? The parish I attend still permits altar helpers to be both men and women. Are there changes coming?

There is no mandatory change coming in the foreseeable future.

That issue of how "gravely sinful" are the spreading of "rumor and gossip" though is a good reminder to us in situations like this. Maybe they've undermined their ability to talk openly and charitably to the priest about their grievances because of it?

Not in Vatican II, but in other infallible decrees of the Church.

Two letters from the Bishop on the subject.

And here is a quote of from the Diocese regarding the story in the National Catholic Reporter.

Quote:
Neither Morlino nor anyone from the diocese would respond to a request for an interview. A spokesman from the diocese wrote in an email, "We have no hope that assisting NCR with a story will result in a just reporting of the facts regarding the sad situation in Platteville."

There are some really telling responses among parishioners, particularly those who have started going to protestant Churches since this has happened. Really? You don't like the way the priest does things so you leave the Church? Frankly, those people were never Catholic to begin with.

These priests belong to a religious congregation of pontifical right with a specific charism. This charism was known to the Bishop when he invited them to help staff parishes in his diocese and he cannot ask them to violate that. Frankly, I am surprised that the superior has not pulled his priests out of the parishes at this point. A Franciscan brother was talking about this issue and related a story where there were similar issues with some Franciscan priests in a parish. The superior came and allowed the parishioners who had concerns to air them directly to him. He waited in the parish for an entire day and no one showed up. After that, the superior pulled his men from the parish. The bishop, not having three extra priests at the ready was forced to let the parish close for about 6 months until they could get other priests. The people in this current situation ought to be careful or they could find themselves out of more than a school.

The laity there tried extortion to coerce the bishop into turning on the priests. All they accomplished was the closure of their school.

I agree. If that is all it took for someone to leave then you have to imagine that their faith wasn't very strong to begin with.

If I may, the better question is: is this liberal newspaper considered to be Catholic? And the answer is: no.
