So, "People," in my sphere are advocating Pastoral Associates, i.e., associates who will assist the priest with non-sacramental tasks, like counseling, and evangelization, teaching, sick calls (again, non-sacramental), etc.

I've read some positives and negatives regarding this role. And I do recognize a need for pastoral assistance since there is undoubtedly a shortage of priests (especially in my neck of the woods).

But what about female Pastoral Associates? I've done some internet searching, and cannot find anything really definitive on the topic. I'm really just looking for conversation/opinions regarding this "possible," role for women in the Church.

Pax Christi,
Sarah

This isn't a new idea and women have been doing all these things for years. What's new(ish) and potentially dangerous is the thought of making this an official office of the Universal Church in a way that clericalizes the laity (to their own detriment, as Pope Francis has said several times).

(I just realized I put this in the wrong forum. I didn't have my glasses on. Vanity of vanities!)

So, a formal office has not been created, as of yet. But I can tell you from where I sit, that it's only a matter of time. I can presume that this may cause confusion within the laity? Furthermore, it sounds as if the perception of this position will be largely dependent upon the way the female pastoral associate perceives the job, and hence communicates her perceptions to the flock. Correct?

Oh, yes, yes. Correct!

I opine that such a position would be filled by either (1) women who genuinely want to assist and serve and (2) women who want to play priest and to get a foot in the door to secularize the Church. Guess whom I think would form the majority?

The majority of pastoral associates in our Archdiocese are female. They are paid for about 10-15 hours a week in most cases.

There is a 4 year part time formation program.

They organise Liturgies, catechesis and take communion to the sick.

There is little confusion about the roles of the Priest (who is freed up for sacramental duties, counselling, visits to parishioners) and seems to work well here.

My SiL is somewhere in the process of becoming one of these and the impression she leaves with her non-Catholic parents is that she is basically a priest. I don't know if my SiL has actually said that, but a few days ago I heard her mother (my MiL) talking about it and from what my MiL said it sounded like she (my MiL) was describing the functions of a priest.

Given that the various vocations are a mystery to most non-Catholics (and upon which many superimpose the templates of other denominations and of modernism), I'm not surprised. It would seem appropriate, however, to educate those who have formed such opinions on the essential differences in roles.

Given the paucity of Catholics in my family and their animosity towards the faith, I have to choose my battles. On this topic, unless I am asked a direct question, I will be taciturn.

I was going to say that, but I limit myself to only three big words per post.

"That" is a short word. You would have been OK.
