Does anyone have any good links that describe excommunication? I am trying (in vain I think) to describe it to some Protestants on another forum and of course with links, they don't believe anything and they have a pretty distorted view of it. They keep calling it a "punishment" in the strictest of senses.

"Being a penalty, it supposes guilt; and being the most serious penalty that the Church can inflict, it naturally supposes a very grave offence. It is also a medicinal rather than a vindictive penalty, being intended, not so much to punish the culprit, as to correct him and bring him back to the path of righteousness."

Is it not a punishment in the strictest of senses (and also a tremendous mercy)? It would be nice to be told without any question if one drifted outside the 'normal' bounds of salvation so one would be absolutely sure of how to return (and the necessity of returning).

Chris G, in Dante's Purgatorio ::): there is an excellent discussion which demonstrates some real life situations of excommunication and where I learned most of the theology behind it and the reasons for it. Dorothy L Sayers, a convert, gives by far the best notes to understanding it. I don't have my book with me, but I will try to send the discussion to you asap.
