I just wanted to say this is great. I really need to memorize it! If I'd had my head screwed on straight I could have already made a good argument with some of my protesting protestant friends who have been calling me lately.

Catholic Christian - That doesn't make sense, though. The New Testament books are not mentioned in the Bible nor is the idea of a definitive literary body of Christian writings. For that information you trust the testimony of the Church. I sense an inconsistency here. How can you say that you reject oral tradition when you come by your knowledge of scripture via oral tradition?

Protestant Christian - The Catholics were involved in inquisitions!

Obviously you have tried this line of resoning on real Protestants.

I honestly do not understand Protestantism's response to this dilemma. Surely somewhere there is an argument in answer to the question that is at least internally consistent.

Every Protestant I try to engage about it just seems to consider the canon of Scripture to have always existed as it is.
