I've recently begun digging into scripture more, but am finding that I am in much need of something to help put it into a greater context.

I know there are study bibles out there, and there are other commentary resources... but I don't know where to start.

What would you recommend?

I've been thinking about getting the highly praised Navarre Study Bible.

I can't buy anything, so there are three available-online commentaries I use:

Catena Aurea
Lapide
Haydock

What helped me the most was The Great Adventure Through the Bible: https://shop.ascensionpress.com/collect ... -salvation
Not cheap, I know, but well worth it.

I'm not a huge fan of the Navarre series. It's mostly quotations from the Fathers and from St. Jose Maria Escriva, which isn't bad or wrong but is probably not what most people are looking for.

The Great Adventure Series is awesome. For six years I attended two a year in nearby Catholic parishes that gave them to groups. There were about ten people taking it in a group, and a facilitator, who had his/her own workbook to facilitate the meeting... and the facilitators were actually taking the bible study also. It was two hours a week, we had homework and questions to answer in workbooks after reading a small section of scripture that was assigned. As a group we responded to the questions, had discussion and input, and then saw a video of Jeff Cavins giving us a talk on what we had just studied, and expanding on it in a very interesting way.

Several years ago it started in our Cathedral, which was attended by those in other parishes, and then it started up, eventually in several other parishes. We paid about $25. or $35. for the longer series, most of which were 25 weeks. We got our own workbooks . What was so good about it was if one could not make a meeting, there were two or three more to follow that same week with other facilitators in different time slots. It was well organized!

Huh? While it's not bad, the Oxford Bible Commentary is secular and applies the historical-critical method, with all the problems that usually entails. What is 'Catholic about it?

I've long felt that reference to the Fathers would be a very good and interesting thing. How many Catholics can explain, for example, consensus patrum and its significance in Catholic understanding of the Bible?

Is there a commentary you recommend, Father?

Probably the Hahn/Mitch ones from Ignatius.

Even though the editors are evangelicals, I have heard that the 'Ancient Christian Scripture Commentary' series which is dedicated to showing how the scriptures were understood by the Fathers of the Church, is very good. I haven't read it myself, so I can't recommend it directly, but I have heard good things about it. If you want to check it out, at least some of the volumes are available on Kindle for less than $20.

Again, it depends on what you want a comnentary to do for you. I have some of the ACCS volumes, and they are helpful if what you want is to see what some of the Fathers said about a passage. But I don't regard them as a general-purpose commentary.

I mentioned it because it seemed that was exactly the kind of book that Irenaeus was asking for

Perhaps, but not the OP, which is why I threw in my caution.

To be honest, I don't know what I'm looking for.

You're looking for something that will help you understand what you're reading?

Yes. But based on what I'm reading above, that appears to be a simple request with a complex answer.

Not really. I would go with the Hahn/Mitch series. The other choices are for more particular niches.
