If I have to make a difficult decision between two non-sinful things, may I ask God to show me a sign of my choice?

Fr Wienandy asked God that he would write to Pope Francis if a foreign cleric commended his writing.

You may, but it should not be a regular occurrence.

Can you explain, please?

Praying for signs should not be something you do often. I doubt Fr. Weinandy had done it more than a time or two before this, if at all.

Who was it that had this prayer: that if she was conforming to God's will, she prayed that he would keep her there; and if she wasn't, she prayed that he would put her there?

St. Joan of Arc, and it was a question of being in a state of grace.

I mean, can you give an argument in favour of praying for signs, at least rarely?

Whenever I think about asking for a sign, or trying to interpret a particular event I think about this:

Brother Lawrence’s devotion… was not at all subject to visions or other extraordinary revelations. He was convinced that these, even when authentic, most often signified the weakness of a soul that seeks God’s gifts rather than God himself.

-The Ways of Brother Lawrence by M. L’Abbe Joseph de Beaufort, page 55, in The Practice of the Presence of God: The Complete Works of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection. Translated by Sister Mary David, S.S.N.D. (Paulist Press, New York, 1978)

That is perhaps a little more negative than I would say myself, though (as noted) I am very cautious about it.

I agree, but once I read it I could never unread it. It's been with me for 30 years.
