Can every passage of the Bible be understood in all four different senses (-CCC)? |

Every passage certainly has a literal meaning. I would have to think about it with respect to the others, but my initial reaction is that they do. |

I would say it is a firm and unequivocal 'no', after all, take a verse like Matthew 21:17 "and leaving them, he went out to the city of Bethany and lodged there', it is difficult of a noncontrived interpretation of that verse other than the strictly literal one. |

Origen would take that as a dare. |

Besides, that's a verse, not a passage. |

Check the Catena Aurea for Matthew. There are indeed extended senses of the verse. |

I would think that it would depend on the genre. Psalms and Proverbs have more of a moral sense, and Daniel and Revelation have more of an anagogical sense. The CCC groups the 3 Spiritual senses together, so while all of Scripture has both a literal and a spiritual sense, I don't know that you can necessarily apply all 3 of the Spiritual senses equally. |

But the Psalms definitely have an allegorical and an anagogical sense too (at least certain psalms). My initial reaction to the OP would be, "Not necessarily." Maybe not every verse/passage has all three spiritual senses, but I don't think looking at a passage, I would ever be able to determine it didn't have one of them. I may tend to see one of the senses in a verse, but it may have other senses that I can't see. |
