Is it okay to read heretical works if one goes in aware of the errors and firm in one's own faith? Or is the very act sinful?

Depends on your level of spiritual maturity and theological knowledge.

When studying theology and scripture I had to read Luther, Calvin and heretics and schismatics from the last 2,000 years.

I had no problems with doing that (as did the other Catholics on the course).

If you are immature though then the readings can confusion and that would be a wrong decision.
