Ok, so detraction is the sin of revealing some fault of another person without a just reason. It takes away their good reputation that is their due.

But I was wondering, is listening or reading to news and gossip participating in the sin of detraction? I take no malicious pleasure in it, I just like to be informed about what's going on (especially with the terrible stuff happening within the Church), but I have a nagging suspicion that that might not be a good reason.

I also read somewhere that it's alright to read or talk about someone's fault if it's generally known to a community or what they call notorious; so do you think if it's published on the internet and it gets a lot of hits, one can discuss and read it?

You participate if you willingly listen to another's detraction - but I don't know if the same can be said about the printed word.

Also worth noting: Is this good for you, even if it's not sinful?
