1. What purpose did rational analysis serve in the early church?

2. Why do we need human reason at all if we have divine revelation?

Thanks for any and all replies

I assume you're not talking about mathematics in the first question :) but I don't know what you are talking about.

As for #2:

Thanks Padre...the first question has to do with the early church’s encounter with and reaction to philosophy.... if that clears it up any.

Tertullian famously didn't like it, asking, "What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem?" But he wouldn't have had to complain if there weren't a lot of contact to begin with.

He asked about the early Church, not the Middle Ages, so I disagree with you. :cloud9:

Define 'early', if the Church lasts another 10,000 years we will be considered to be part of 'the early Church'

As used now, it generally means St. Augustine or earlier.

The book starts right out with Tertullian. :fyi:

I assumed you were answering question #1 with the book recommendation :fyi: Since that's not what you were thinking, I disagree with you :cloud9:

I disagree. I think early would include St. Gregory the Great, and he was after St. Augustine by more than a century, wasn't he? I was told by a priest once that "Early Church Fathers" includes everyone up to and including Isidore of Seville in the West and everyone up to and including John Damascene in the East.

I recognize this is not a hard-and-fast category, though.

The term "Fathers of the Church" is generally held to go up to St. John Damascene. There's much less consensus AFAIK over what's "early."

Also, you're agreeing with gherkin :fyi:
